TL;DR: Detroit-based Borg Robotics has unveiled the Borg 01, a modular humanoid robot designed for industrial use. It can autonomously switch between a bipedal and wheeled base, with swappable end effectors to handle various tasks. While capable of walking, the wheeled configuration is preferred for its efficiency and 12-hour battery life. Borg 01 is part of a broader automation ecosystem, including autonomous pallet jacks and forklifts, all managed via a unified system. The robot is purpose-built to integrate into existing factory workflows and is set to launch in Q2 2025.

Borg Robotics Debuts Modular Humanoid 'Borg 01' for Industrial Tasks

Detroit-based Borg Robotics, founded in 2022, has officially unveiled its first humanoid robot, the Borg 01, targeting industrial and manufacturing applications. Based on information shared by the company, the robot emphasizes modularity and practicality for factory and warehouse environments, distinguishing itself from more general-purpose humanoid designs.

Modularity at its Core

The defining feature of Borg 01 is its modular architecture. Borg Robotics states the robot is designed to autonomously switch between a bipedal configuration, standing 5'8" (173 cm) tall, and a wheeled base. This adaptability extends to its end effectors, which can also be autonomously swapped to suit different tasks, with options including vacuum grippers and five-fingered hands.

Interestingly, Borg highlights a strong preference among potential users for the wheeled configuration. The company notes that the wheeled base offers superior performance and power efficiency, enabling up to 12 hours of operation per battery swap. An optional quad-arm setup is also available for the wheeled version, potentially increasing throughput for specific tasks.

Built for the Factory Floor

Borg explicitly positions the Borg 01 as a tool for tackling repetitive, physically demanding jobs often subject to labor shortages and high turnover in the industrial sector. The company contrasts its robot with humanoids designed for dynamic locomotion or demonstrations, stating Borg 01 was "purpose built for industrial environments" and "to get real work done."

Key components, like its Actuator 02 which delivers a claimed 270 Nm of torque from a 1.6 kg package, are designed and built in-house in Detroit. Borg aims for the robot to integrate into existing workflows without requiring modifications to workstations, a significant claim for automation hardware.

Part of a Larger Ecosystem

Borg 01 isn't a standalone product. It's presented as part of a connected ecosystem of AI-integrated autonomous robots designed for seamless industrial automation. This suite also includes an autonomous pallet jack (with standard and 'Pro' versions featuring omnidirectional wheels and adjustable forks), an autonomous forklift, and a heavy-load mobile industrial cobot with a 30kg payload and 2-meter reach.

The company suggests these robots will work collaboratively, managed through a unified system.

Launch and Availability

Borg Robotics is targeting a launch for Borg 01, alongside the autonomous pallet jack and another unannounced robot, in the second quarter of 2025. The company consistently emphasizes its Detroit roots, aligning its mission with the resurgence of American manufacturing.

While the concept of a modular humanoid is intriguing, the emphasis on the wheeled base's practical advantages raises questions about the role of bipedalism in these specific industrial contexts. Borg's focus seems firmly planted on solving immediate automation needs within existing facility constraints.
