Engine AI: China's High-Speed Contender Shakes Up the Humanoid Robot Race

In the hyper-competitive world of humanoid robotics, Shenzhen EngineAI Robotics Technology Co., Ltd. (众擎机器人) has emerged as a force to be reckoned with, seemingly overnight. Founded in the tech hub of Shenzhen in October 2023 , Engine AI, under the leadership of serial robotics entrepreneur Zhao Tongyang , has launched multiple advanced robot platforms in less than a year, capturing global attention and significant investment.  

Rapid Product Rollout & Disruptive Pricing

Engine AI's strategy is marked by speed and accessibility. Its first product, the SA01 bipedal robot, launched in July 2024, targeting research and education with a remarkably low price point of around US$5,400. This was quickly followed by the flagship SE01 full-size humanoid in October 2024 , aimed at industrial tasks and priced aggressively between US$20,000-$30,000. December 2024 saw the launch of the dynamic PM01 humanoid , competing directly with rivals like Unitree's G1 but undercutting its price at roughly US$12,000-$13,700. This pricing strategy, enabled by in-house development of core components like joints and leveraging Shenzhen's supply chain , aims to democratize access to advanced robotics.  

AI-Driven Movement and Viral Moments

Technologically, Engine AI emphasizes achieving natural, human-like movement. The SE01 gained viral fame for its remarkably fluid walking gait demonstrated on Shenzhen streets, earning praise even from Nvidia researchers. This is achieved using end-to-end neural networks, reinforcement learning, and simulation-to-reality techniques, aiming to overcome the stiff, bent-knee movements common in other robots. The company further grabbed headlines when its PM01 robot performed a claimed world-first robotic front flip in February 2025, showcasing its advanced dynamic control capabilities. The company's profile was further boosted by viral interactions between its PM01 robot and popular livestreamer IShowSpeed during his visit to Shenzhen, where the robot showcased dance moves inspired by the film Kung Fu Hustle and performed its signature front flip.

Ambition Fueled by Funding

Engine AI's rapid progress is backed by substantial funding. After securing nearly US$14 million in initial angel rounds in August 2024 , the company announced a further US$28 million investment in February 2025, notably sourced from Middle Eastern investors. This capital injection fuels its ambitious plans, including producing over 1,000 robots in 2025 and targeting profitability by 2026.  

Challenges Ahead

Despite its impressive demonstrations and rapid growth, Engine AI faces the critical challenge of translating its dynamic capabilities into commercially viable robots performing practical work. A notable gap in its public specifications is the payload capacity for its robots , a key metric for industrial applications. Scaling production and navigating intense competition, both domestically in China's thriving robotics ecosystem and globally, remain significant hurdles.  

Engine AI represents a compelling example of high-speed innovation in robotics, leveraging AI and strategic pricing to make a significant impact quickly. Its journey from viral demonstrations to potentially widespread commercial deployment will be a key indicator of the broader humanoid robot industry's trajectory.
